A while ago I made a steam punk ring for my son. I was given the pocket watch that the cogs came out of. There was a backplate with a serial number on it. It was made by the Elgin National Watch Company USA. It has a serial number 13118057. If you look it up it will tell you it was made in approx 1908. It is 117 years old. I used the back plate on a different pendent with the same theme. I didn't know what to do with the face plate either but I knew I could not throw it away. Then an idea began to form. Have you heard the phrase "Tide and time wait for no man!" It is a quote from Chaucer and means that no one is so powerful that they can stop the march of time. An poignant reminder. As well as having this very old part of a watch I love the sea and often collect things from the shore when I am near. On a trip to Cornwall there is a beach where we would often find flat, thin stones. (Great for skimming, by the way) I had found one there and the shape of it particularly seemed to suit the face of the watch. The face still has a part of one of the hands on it, which I wanted to keep. I was able to fit the watch face to the stone and the hand still goes round.
There is a video of it on Tiktok, click here to watch it.
So there it is, a totally unique, a one of a kind item, that fits that saying "Time and tide wait for no man," so well. An old watch and an old shell. Totally unique just like you.
