A while ago I made a steam punk ring for my son. I was given the pocket watch that the cogs came out of. When we opened the back of the watch I was really surprised by what I saw. The back plate was elaborately engraved and decorated. There was also a serial number on it. It was made by the Elgin National Watch Company USA. It has a serial number 13118057. If you look it up it will tell you it was made in approx 1908. It is 117 years old. I didn't know what to do with it then but I knew I could not throw it away. Then an idea began to form. Have you heard the phrase "Tide and time wait for no man!" It is a quote from Chaucer and means that no is so powerful that they can stop the march of time. An poignant reminder. As well as having this very old part of a watch I love the see and often collect things from the shore when I am near. I had some oyster shells that I had found washed up on the beach. One in particular seemed to fit the back plate really well with only a few adjustments. The back of the shell was a bit flaky in places so I have used some resin to seal it and make it smooth.
There is a Tiktok video about how I made it. Click here to watch it.
So there it is, a totally unique, one of a kind item, that fit that saying "Time and tide wait for no man," so well. An old watch and an old shell. Totally unique just like you.
