Hi, my name is Rob Mays. I have always been interested in making things from wood. Equally, I love the sea and being by the sea fishing or just walking along the beach. I think being able to work with these materials is amazing. That is how the name Rmaysing Things came about. I make Rmaysing things from amazing materials. I thought it was a nice little play on words.
When ever I went to the beach I would always collect stones, shells, bits of pottery or sea glass that I found. But I didn’t know what to do with it. That’s is when I started to put different things together that I had found such as a flat stone with a sea shell and creating things that people could wear, jewellery, in the form of necklaces, bracelets, anklets and rings.
Wood turning has been a love of mine for many years. There is always lots to learn and keep you on your toes. As I have worked with wood for a long time, I have become a great believer that in each piece of wood you turn there is a shape an item that wants to be formed. This feeling has then translated into some of the spoon carving that I have done.
I don’t like to mass produce things, I find it becomes dull making the same things over and over. So, I only make one or two of the same things. Then I want to move onto to a different shape or form of whatever I am making. I often try to find new ways of putting things together, such as the wooden cabochon rings that I make. Making these pieces often gives me new ideas for another project.
With the jewellery that I make, especially with the beads I am often drawn to the colours and it also intrigues me about the virtues of the stones and what they are alleged to be able to give to you. I’m not sure how much I believe it, but I do accept that all things are connected on some level. We are all energy and everything is energy and has a frequency that interacts, which is fascinating.
